Council Finances Left In Chaos By Conservative Council

Lib Dem Councillors received an unpleasant surprise after winning control of Shepway Council in May. The budget passed by the Conservatives earlier this year is already in tatters and tough action is needed to tackle the crisis.

New Council Leader Linda Cufley said, "We opposed the Tory budget earlier this year saying it just did not add up and sadly we have been proved right. The Tories have left the finances in a disgraceful state."

Conservative blunders include failing to allocate ANY MONEY AT ALL for the planned Shepway Cricket Festival which has now had to be cancelled. It was also found that many cuts that the Council was supposed to make earlier this year were put off until after the elections!

Other projects which the Tories claimed were guaranteed like Rail for Folkestone and Folkestone's Town Centre redevelopment are also far from certain to actually happen.

Parliamentary Spokesman Peter Carroll commented, "The new Lib Dem team are working hard to put things back on track. It appears that the Tories were hiding many things from local voters during the election campaign. They may no longer be in power, but I fear the residents of Shepway will be paying the price for Tory failures for many years to come."
