20mph zones can cut casualties by 40%
A report in the Independent suggests that road casualties could be cut by 40% by the introduction of 20mph limits in built-up areas. 20mph zones also have strong support amongst voters according to a ComRes opinion poll.
Lib Dem Folkestone West County Councillor Tim Prater comments:
"The direction of Government and Transport Minister Norman Baker is exactly that taken by the Kent lib Dems. We've been pushing Kent County Council to allow and support 20mph zones in areas where there is strong community support.
"It is essential that each road is looked at locally and not just imposed from the top, but particularly on roads where there are a large number of children there could be a big benefit for road safety and improving the environment. This should be a 'bottom-up' scheme with residents bringing forward proposals and receiving active support from Kent County Council, and indeed Government, not the other way around."
