A Victory for Freedom: Government Announces End of Control Orders

The Liberal Democrats have welcomed a Government announcement scapping Labour's controversial control orders and 28 days detention without charge. The announcement fulfilled a Lib Dem manifesto pledge.

Lib Dem Councillor and civil rights campaigner Gary Fuller said:

"Opposition to Labour's Control Orders was a major reason I joined the Liberal Democrats some years ago. The ability to hold people without charge and the abuse of terrorism laws to arrest people going about their lawful business were a disgrace.

"I'm delighted at the Lib Dem inspired move to abolish Labour's Control Orders. It's a victory for those who have campaigned to restore the historic freedoms that Labour spent 13 years destroying.

"Control orders are gone. "28 days detention without charge is gone. Indiscriminate stop and search is gone. The abuse of anti-terror powers by councils to pursue petty offences is over.

"There has to be a balance to be struck between freedom and security. These new proposals protect British people while upholding our values."
