Adopt a new way of life

12 Nov 2010

Two mums have said adopting through Kent County Council has changed their lives for the better. They spoke as part of KCC's ongoing campaign to look for people to provide loving and permanent homes for children.

Both found out more about adoption by attending one of a series of information events, which are held throughout the year. Last Saturday, as part of National Adoption Week, an open day was held in Canterbury. This attracted 72 potential families.

Liz, from east Kent, said:

"I absolutely would say it is a fantastic thing to do. I couldn't ask for more gorgeous sons. I have a perfect family. When I thought about adoption I went to one of the information days that KCC run. I didn't even realise that as a single person I could adopt. I had gone in to talk about overseas adoption assuming that was the route I would take. Having spoken to them I went for UK adoption and it has worked out fantastically.

"I had a fantastic social worker for both the children I've adopted. I couldn't have asked for better support, she is always on the other end of the phone. She did her best to not make the process too intrusive and not make me feel too judged."

Anne, from mid Kent, said:

"We've had our children for four years. They have changed our lives totally. I wouldn't be without them. We went to an information evening and we came away and thought about it again and waited another year before we got in touch with social services. It has to be thought about carefully and the impact it has on everyone in your family. It took about a year to get a match but it was worth waiting for."

Adoptive families are particularly needed for older children, groups of brothers and sisters, and children from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. KCC is looking for single people or couples in long-term relationships and welcomes applications from right across the community.
