5 - 21 JUNE: SHEPWAY ARTISTS OPENING THEIR STUDIOS TO THE PUBLIC

As part of the South East Open Studios initiative, local artists welcome you to their studios. This is a chance to see how local artists produce their art work and buy direct from them if you wish. They are a friendly bunch and always happy to show and talk about their work in these informal settings, so do visit the studios where you see their signs. Shepway has nineteen artists opening their studios this year , Guides to the studios will be available in libraries and other venues such as colleges and galleries. In Hythe Library, examples of all Shepway artists work will be exhibited from May 19th to June 29th and you are invited to come to the preview on Saturday 23rd May from 3-5pm and meet the artists.

Art exhibition in Bexhill-on-Sea

'Seascape' is a new body of work by British artist Susan Collins combining digital technologies with the classical traditions of English landscape painting. The project presents a visual exploration into the natural cycles of tide, time and light across the South East coast of England, which includes Shepway - one of the webcams is in the Channel Suite of the Leas Cliff Hall. 2011 FOLKESTONE TRIENNIAL

Preparations have begun for this next major exhibition with the announcement that Andrea Schlieker, Curator of the 2008 exhibition and 2009 Turner Prize Judge, has been appointed to direct the second Folkestone Triennial. Arts and regeneration charity The Creative Foundation, organiser of the Triennial, has also announced that eight of the 22 works commissioned for the 2008 exhibition will remain permanently in Folkestone. They are:

· Adam Chodzko's short film Pyramid and accompanying documentation sign

· Nathan Coley's illuminated light structure Heaven is a Place Where Nothing Ever Happens

· Tracey Emin's seven small bronzes representing Baby Things

· Patrick Tuttofuocco's three metre high multi-coloured F O L K E S T O N E sign on the harbour arm, and accompanying film

· Mark Wallinger's Folk Stones, containing 19,240 numbered beach pebbles

· Richard Wentworth's Racinated, a series of ten text plaques

· Pae White's Barking Rocks, a rustic dog park

· Richard Wilson's 18 Holes, a series of three beach huts

LITERARY FESTIVAL

This year's Festival will take place between Friday 6 and Saturday 14 November and will be known by its new name, the Folkestone Book Festival. The new name is designed to help the Festival appeal to a wider audience with an interest in books and reading as well as fans of traditional literature. Quarterhouse, the new performing arts venue in Tontine Street will be the new home for the Festival.

VISIT TO THE ROYAL ACADEMY'S SUMMER EXHIBITION & SIR JOHN SOANE'S MUSEUM, LONDON - Wednesday 17 June

The Summer Exhibition is the largest open contemporary art exhibition in the world, drawing together a wide range of new work by both established and unknown living artists.

Sir John Soane Museum - Sir John Soane RA designed this beautiful house at No. 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields not only to live in but also as a setting for his antiquities and works of art.

THE SOUTH EAST FESTIVAL OF ARCHITECTURE - 20 May to 28 June

The south east Festival of Architecture is co-ordinated by RIBA South East and the Solent Centre for Architecture + Design (SCA+D). Around 80 events with the theme 'Better Places, Better Spaces' will take place from across the nine counties of the south east. Most are free of charge. Whether your preference is Gothic or Grand Designs, during the south east Festival of Architecture you can:

Ø enjoy guided tours of new buildings by their architects

Ø see buildings that you pass every day in a completely new way

Ø get a new perspective on architecture, through artists' eyes

Ø take part in workshops with your family; and

SOUTH EAST DANCE

South East Dance is keen to play a stronger role in connecting the dance sector within the region. SYNC SOUTH EAST

This is a new leadership development programme designed to support and develop deaf and disabled people and disability arts organisations and projects in the South East of England so that they can reach their true potential. Sync South East and the Disability Awareness training programme are part of the Accentuate programme which will deliver the Cultural Olympiad's ambition for the South East to be the lead region in the UK for work with deaf and disabled people-led cultural activity.
