As Tory Ballot Papers Go Out, Shepway Lib Dems Debate Policy, Not Personalities
As ballot papers go out to Conservative party members nationally in the increasingly bitter contest to replace Michael Howard as leader, the Shepway Liberal Democrats "Meeting the Challenge" Policy Forum will be taking place at 82A Sandgate High Street from 7pm on 11th November. All members are welcome to the meeting, which is part of a nationwide consultation on two key questions: "What challenges will the UK and British politics face over the next 5-10 years?" and "What should the Liberal Democrats be doing about them?".
Charles Kennedy has established the "Meeting the Challenge" debate as the Liberal Democrats' largest ever national policy consultation, and Shepway Liberal Democrats are doing their bit to ensure that as many party members as possible have their say.
Speaking at the launch of the "Meeting the Challenge" policy review, Charles Kennedy said:
"I am determined that, despite our success at the General Election, we avoid complacency and maintain the Liberal Democrats as a dynamic forward looking and progressive force in politics. Our distinct path must be based on our liberal values and principles. That's what the Meeting the Challenge consultation is all about.
"21st Century Liberalism has to be about more than the politics of protests or the need for principled positions within politics. It has to be about presenting ourselves as credible contenders for power - not just for its own sake, but because of what we want to do with it as we gain more.
"This party has always been a party of ideas. We must continue to think and adapt to the changes in society, finding new solutions to the problems people face every day. This consultation is a new way for you to help us find those solutions. So get involved!"
All members are welcome to take part in the Meeting the Challenge debate, either on-line at www.meetingthechallenge.net, by completing the form sent to all members, or by attending Friday's Policy Forum.
