Beaumont Slams Broadmeadow Care home Fiasco

23 Jun 2006

Park Ward Lib Dem Cllr Lynne Beaumont has slammed the County Council's decision to close Broadmeadow Care Home and move its vulnerable residents. Broadmeadow will be demolished to make way for an entrance and car park for the new Academy.

Cllr Beaumont said:

"We were given assurances that Broadmeadow would not close until its new replacement was fully complete and ready for the residents. Now we learn that it is to close and the residents will have to move out into temporay accommodation and wait for perhaps 7 months until their new building is ready. Such a move will be very traumatic for these elderly and frail residents.

"When are Kent County Council, and the Primary Care Trust, going to put the needs of these residents first?

"We have listened to promise after promise that this would not happen. Yet again people have been let down.

"Folkestone recently lost two wards at the Royal Victoria Hospital that specialised in the care of elderly people. During the public consultation about the closure of these wards, there were further assurances that these would not close until the new Broadmeadow was built.

"People believed the Primary Care Trust. They categorically stated that the new Broadmeadow would be ready before these wards closed. We all know, that this has not happened.

'When are Kent County Council, and the Primary Care Trust, going to mean what they say. When can local people start believing what they are told?

"When are the needs of local elderly residents going to put above the need for a car park?

"I am disgusted at this decision, when is Kent County Council going to understand, that people matter."
