CCTV To Be Axed?

28 Jan 2003

Conservatives running Shepway Council could be about to axe Shepway's CCTV system in a desperate bid to save money.

Despite years of high Council Tax rises, the Council now finds itself needing to make huge cuts to services in order to balance the books.

Lib Dem Councillor John Hughes said, "This Conservative Council has wasted hundreds of thousands of pounds of OUR money on consultants and huge pay rises for senior Conservative Councillors. Now they are having to cut vital services to pay for their incompetence."

Camera Shocker

It has also been revealed that the Council has allowed the CCTV system to fall into a terrible state of repair, with some cameras not working at all.

Councillor David Dickinson said, "It is an appalling state of affairs. Good CCTV coverage is essential in our bid to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in our town. It appears that the Council is just giving up on crime."

Town Attractions At Risk

Local Lib Dem campaigner Lynne Beaumont has warned that without CCTV, several local attractions and our town centre will be at risk of crime and vandalism.

Lynne said, "Attractions like our very popular Coastal Park are currently protected by the CCTV scheme. Who will look after the facilities once CCTV is gone?"

Lynne continued, "I am also very concerned about our town centre. Without CCTV coverage, crime and anti-social behaviour is bound to increase. The Council must think again and not cut CCTV coverage."
