The Sidney Cooper Weston Fountain: Staying in Harbour

A fountain in the heart of the East of Folkestone will remain in place after a proposal to move it was rejected.

Local action group Go Folkestone had proposed to seek to move and restore the The Sidney Cooper Weston Fountain, at the junction of Wear Bay Road and Wear Bay Crescent, Folkestone. It is unserstood they were seeking to move it to the foot of the Leas Lift.

An update issued last week confirmed that Go Folkestone could if it wished resotre the fountain, but would not be given permission to move it. The statement saisd

"Folkestone Parks and Gardens Charity's Board of Trustees considered this matter and agreed in principle that Go Folkestone can seek funding for, and carry out to an agreed standard, the restoration of the fountain.

"The Board did not agree to the proposal to relocate the fountain.

"Go Fo0lkestone has been informed of the above and we are waiting for confirmation that they remains interested in progressing the restoration alone."

Folkestone Lib Dem campaigner Danielle Anson had fought against the moving of the statue and was delighted to hear the news the move plan had been quashed. Danielle said:

"This is fantastic news and exactly what we hoped to hear.

"So many people in the area have spoken to me about the fountain and expressed their wish for it to stay where it belongs."
