Demo for Democracy: we need you to help us get Proportional Representation!
On Saturday 7th May - the anniversary of the election of the most unrepresentative Parliament since women won the vote - Make Votes Matter is holding the Demo for Democracy outside Parliament. Baroness Sal Brinton, President of the Liberal Democrats, will speak alongside figures from across the political spectrum, united by the common cause of fair representation for all voters.
Change to our broken voting system is possible. There is real momentum developing behind the campaign for PR. It's driven by a growing appreciation that we now live in a truly multi-party democracy. It's also driven by the sheer unfairness of the May 2015 election, in which one quarter of all voters (those who voted Lib Dem, UKIP or Green) are now represented by 1.5% of MPs. Half a million people have signed petitions calling for reform, every poll taken in the last year has found overwhelming support for PR, and in July we held the first demonstration against First Past the Post since 2011. This February, Make Votes Matter organised the PR Alliance Building Conference attended by leaders and MPs from seven parties to plan how to secure PR by 2021.
But to enable pro-PR MPs to fight this cause, we must make our voices heard. Make Votes Matter has been working to keep electoral reform on the political agenda between General Elections, with considerable success. We are run entirely by volunteers and funded entirely by personal donations. For this to be sustainable, we need everyone who believes we need a fair, proportional voting system to do what they can to be there on the 7th of May to demand a fair democracy.
Like our last demo it will be a fun, family-friendly day. Alongside Sal Brinton the following will be speaking; Natalie Bennett (Leader, Green Party), John Nicolson MP (SNP), Diane James MEP (UKIP), Marianne Overton (Local Government Authority Independent Group Leader), Alex Runswick (Director, Unlock Democracy) and our own Owen Winter MYP (Spokesperson, Make Votes Matter). There will be live music from Phil Cooper and fun creative action.
We hope you can join us on the day: 12:00 - 15:00, Saturday 7th May, Westminster. Please sign up on Facebook or Attending to let us know you are coming.
