17 Dec 2009

Folkestone's Dhan Gurung has given a talk on the history of Gurkha battalions at a fund raising dinner at Dartford Greek Taverna on Wednesday. The dinner raised over £100 towards a memorial for the 45,000 brave Gurkha's who have died fighting for the UK.

Councillor and Veteran Gurkha Dhan also discussed his own service from in Burma, Hong Kong and Afghanistan and Iraq, his next chapter as a Lib Dem Campaigner and Town Councillor in Folkestone, and his part in the successful campaign with Joanna Lumley to give Gurkhas rights of residency in the UK.

James Willis, Dartford Lib Dem campaigner and the dinner's organiser, said:

"It is really pleasing from our growing band of campaigners we have raised a sum of money towards this good cause. We very grateful to many the Gurkhas who have served, in some cases sadly laying down their lives fighting for our country. In addition to the money raised we have committed to working together with the North Kent based Gurkhas to help raise a target of £500 towards the fund to build a memorial in Kent."

The Folkestone Gurkha Memorial Fund aims to raise funds to build a Gurkha memorial in Folkestone. You can learn more and donate to the fund at www.gurkhamemorialfund.org.uk/
