Don't punish Shepway

CCTV is one service that may be slashed by the Government

Lib Dems in Shepway are launching a community wide campaign to stop the Labour Government shutting down Shepway. The campaign has started with the placing of a full page advert in the local press.

The Government has announced its intention to "cap" Councils with Council Tax increases higher than single figures. The financial chaos left by the previous Tory Council and the shortage of grant from the Government mean that Shepway Council has to raise Council Tax more than this just to protect existing services.

Council Leader Linda Cufley said "If the Government cap us, it will be outrageously unjust. They will be punishing the people of Shepway for the mistakes made by the previous Conservative administration.

"If we can't get our Council Tax increase of less than £1 a week through, local services will be slashed by the Government, including CCTV, swimming pools, recycling, public toilets and regeneration.

"These were the services that local people voted us in to improve last May. We will fight for our local services all the way. We hope that local people will join our campaign to stop the Government's cuts."
