The Children's Food Trust has today slammed the Conservative Party plan to scrap universal infant free school meals. Chief Executive of the Children's Food Trust, Linda Cregan, said:

"The families that Theresa May describes as 'just about managing' will be hit hardest as their children will now not be guaranteed a nutritious meal every day."

The Lib Dems meanwhile have pledged to extend free school meals to all children in primary education and to promote school breakfast clubs.

Commenting, Lib Dem candidate for Folkestone and Hythe Lynne Beaumont said:

"These cuts are reminiscent of Maggie Thatcher ending universal free school milk in the 1970s. We've gone from Thatcher the milk snatcher to Theresa the lunch stealer. The nasty party truly haven't changed a bit."

"The Lib Dems understand the benefits of free school meals to young people. That's why we believe free school meals should be extended to all primary school pupils."
