Door to Door Cold Selling in the Folkestone Area

4 Jul 2011

Kent Trading Standards have received reports about of cold callers in the Folkestone area selling household goods. Once they have gained access to the property the prices charged are highly inflated, one man was charged £80 for a mop. There have also been reports of money being stolen.

The people involved are three men, two large, one thin, seen in a white van.

Kent Trading Standards advise consumers to be very careful when dealing with traders at their door. If you are approached by anyone offering to sell you goods, turn them away. Previous experience is that goods sold in this way are often of poor quality and over priced. Consider carefully whether you do want the goods offered.

If you are not expecting a visitor use the door chain, door viewer or window to check who it is. Do not allow anyone into your home unless you have already made an appointment to see them and they have identification to confirm who they are.

In most cases if you agree to buy anything costing over £35 from a trader at your door, the law gives you a 7 day "cooling off" period to change your mind. The trader must give you a written cancellation notice if you agree to have any work done. Failure to give this notice is a crime.

If you have any concerns about callers at your door please notify Trading Standards via Consumer Direct on 0808 156 2256 or the police.
