Election Success For Lib Dems
Record 30% Share of Vote In Local Elections
The Lib Dems achieved a record 30% of the vote in the recent local elections. The party gained many Councils and Councillors across the country.
Lib Dem Leader Charles Kennedy hailed the results saying, "This is the first election the party's fought where we have got 30% of the vote. What it means is we are building steadily towards the General Election."
"British politics is now confirmed as a three way fight and we Lib Dems are in there as equal partners."
The Conservatives did worse in these local elections than they did four years ago under William Hague. Under the even more unpopular Iain Duncan Smith it is clear they are making little progress and stand no chance of winning the next General Election.
Charles said, "Leading shadow cabinet members like Party Chairman Theresa May will be looking over her shoulder when she sees our dramatic gains. Also Michael Howard will not be smiling about what happened in his Constituency where the Lib Dems stormed to victory."
Local Lib Dem Peter Carroll added, "With people clearly no longer able to trust this Labour Government, more and more people are turning to the Lib Dems rather than an extreme and divided Conservative Party. I believe our policies like ending tuition fees, free care for the elderly and axing the Council Tax will prove attractive to many people both in Shepway and across the country."
