Fighting for local services
Local Lib Dems are fighting the Government's plans to 'cap' Shepway Council. If the Government gets its way, then the Council will be forced to make cuts to local services totalling £600,000. Many important frontline services could be at risk if these cuts are made.
Lib Dem Council Leader Linda Cufley said, "Local people want decent services, but the Government is forcing us to cut them. We have appealed to the Government to think again about these cuts which will only save the average Council Tax payer 30 pence a week."
Linda continued, "If we are capped, we will listen to local people about which services matter most to them. We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to protect vital frontline services."
Waste of money
Capping will also mean the Council would be forced to send out new Council Tax bills to every resident. The cost of this to local taxpayers will be £100,000.
Lib Dem Councillor Carol Crees said, "This would be a huge waste of taxpayers' money that would be better spent on improving local services. That's why we are urging the Government to think again."
