Folkestone Leas Lift Demonstration Called and Petition Launched

23 Mar 2009

A demonstration against the decision by Conservative Shepway District Council to end the lease on Folkestone's Leas Cliff lift has been called by local campaigners. The demonstration will take place on Friday 27th March at 4pm at the Upper Station of the lift on the Folkestone Leas.

All Shepway residents who oppose the decision to effectively close the lift are being asked to attend to show the Council the level of local anger. A petition to sign will also be available, as well as a letter to send to Shepway District Council.

Shepway Lib Dem Group Leader Lynne Beaumont has pledged to be at the demonstration on Friday. Lynne said:

"This decision, and the way it has been taken with no public consultation show contempt by Shepway Council for local residents and visitors to the area.

"I've been speaking to residents and representatives of groups across the area who share my anger. I hope that every person that wants to see the Leas Lift retained and running will join us on Friday on the Leas as a massive demonstration to the Council that our voice will not be ignored."

The petition calling on Shepway District Council to reverse their decision will be available to sign at the demonstration and can be signed online at http://tinyurl.com/d2zpvd
