Folkestone Marks & Spencer is to close because the company says the branch is not commercially viable. A period of consultation is under way before the staff in the Folkestone store are offered other local jobs.

Local shopper Season Prater said:

"The loss of Marks and Spencer is a real loss to Folkestone. The new shopping centre development will hopefully bring new brands, new shoppers and new life to the town - it's a shame M&S couldn't be part of it."

The head of Marks & Spencer's south division, Anthony Hemmerdinger, said:

"I would like to thank the team for their commitment and excellent service. We have looked at every option to keep the store open."
