Forgotten Sandgate: Wilberforce Road Bench

29 Jun 2015
Broken bench

A few weeks ago, I raised the poor state of repair of the small kerbside bench on Wilberforce Road just off Sandgate High Street at Sandgate Parish Council. I'm pleased to say that the Council have agreed that it should either refurbished or replaced and we're making progress on getting quotes and agreeing the works.

Clearly the bench was placed and paid for in memory of a loved family member and is marked by a plaque, but actually the plaque is about the only remaining peice of the bench still in good order.

Hopefully over then next few months we'll get another bench in place (and keep its plaque!) - its a steep little hill: the place to sit may be welcome for some, and it is a little bit of character in Sandgate that we could all to easily otherwise just ignore or remove completely without respect for why it was there in the first place.

Is there another little bit of Sandgate character near you that needs a little bit of TLC?

From old style bollards that need a coat of paint, the bench that needs a slat replacing or a footpath that could use a new paving slab: often the small fixes are the ones that can make a real difference to the look of the area. Let me know at tim@prater.org.uk and I'll see if we can get them fixed up!
