From Sandgate Mens Club to Sandgate Members Club

I've been a member of the Sandgate Mens Cub for a few years, and was elected to the management committee last year. It's been fun...

However, one thing has particularly concerned me: although the has many women members, women committee members, a woman as Treasurer and a woman as Club Steward, the club name simply did not reflect that women are as welcome in the club as men.

At the AGM of the Sandgate Mens Club of 27th March 2018, I moved the following two proposals:

  • Proposal: To change Rule 1 name to Sandgate Members Club from Sandgate Mens Club.
  • Proposal: Club rules can be changed at any correctly convened General Meeting (AGM or SGM) with the proposal to change publicised at least 21 days prior to the meeting. A vote to change a rule will require a simple majority of votes (not 2/3rds) with votes cast by secret ballot at the meeting.

The Proposal to change the name of the club to Sandgate Members Club passed with an over two-thirds majority of those present and voting.

The proposal to amend the voting rules was defeated.

I'll be back to improve the voting rules of the club in another year. However, I'm delighted for the support in renaming the club and hope we continue to attract new members: men and women alike. You can learn more about the Sandgate Members Club on their website.
