Girl dies after sea rescue near Folkestone

16 Feb 2009

A two-year-old girl has died after she and a baby boy fell into the sea near Folkestone, police have confirmed.

The toddler was airlifted to a London hospital in a critical condition after being rescued by members of the public, but a Kent Police spokeswoman said despite efforts to save the girl, she died on Sunday evening.

The Dover Coastguard was called to Warren Apron, near Folkestone, just before 3pm on Sunday after reports that a pushchair had tumbled into the water. The eight-month-old boy is in a stable condition at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent Police said.

A Coastguard spokesman said the Dover RNLI lifeboat had been launched but the two children were rescued by members of the public.
