Government has no excuse to delay UK residence for Gurkhas - Clegg

7 Jan 2009

Commenting on the Government's delay in responding to the High Court's decision that it was unlawful to exclude from the UK Gurkhas who had retired before 1997, Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg said:

"This is a simple case of right or wrong. Anyone who is prepared to die for this country should be allowed to live in it. The Government has no excuse to drag its feet.

"Any excuses about reviewing cases or delaying new guidance are an insult to the bravery of those who have put their lives on the line for Britain.

"For those Gurkhas living in squalid conditions and with the fear of deportation, each day the Government delays is one day too many."
