Howard Fails Local People

Michael Howard MP

The Lib Dems have condemned Michael Howard MP for his failure to give any help to the Council's battle for a fair Government grant.

Mr Howard's only contribution to date has been attacking the Lib Dem Council. Local Lib Dems believe that Mr Howard should have been using his time and status to lobby Government ministers on behalf of Shepway residents.

Cllr Linda Cufley said, "Our local MP has been more interested in political point scoring against the Lib Dem Council, rather than standing up for the residents of Shepway. As the local MP, Mr Howard could have done a lot more."

MPs in other areas have joined their Councils in the fight for more resources for local services, lobbying ministers and standing up for local residents. Mr Howard has failed to do any of this.

Cllr Paul Marsh added, "Shepway Council finances have been left in a terrible state by the Conservatives and have not been helped by a disappointing Government Grant. It is deeply unfair that Shepway residents should be punished for this. As our local MP, Mr Howard could and should have done more to help."

Notes - In other areas such as Waverley Council in Surrey, the local Lib Dem MP has successfully lobbied local government minister Nick Raynsford for more resources to help the Council out of a difficult situation.
