Brian Copping served as a Councillor for Foord ward on Shepway District Council for around 30 years, and also Folkestone Town Council for eight years. He sadly passed away around 30 May.

Brain was a Liberal Democrat until 2004 before founding People First, but I feel we should mark his contribution to our Town and District over the three decades that he sat as a Councillor. A number of other Councillors at Folkestone and Hythe and Folkestone Town Council served with Brian, and will recall his contribution.

He was an amazing ward councillor, with people always at the heart of what Brian did.

He and Paul Marsh held their ward when no other non-Conservative managed to do so, sometimes to much to my surprise! They sat on the Council from 2011-15 as pretty much the only opposition to the Conservatives.

He understood the issues and knew the residents of his ward better than almost anyone. Tragically Paul Marsh also died some time ago, and the last time I spoke to Brian at any length, he talked about Paul as having been his wingman for 30 years - they were a pair.

Brian was also a dedicated campaigner responsible for organising the memorial to animals who served in both wars that stands in the Garden of Remembrance to this day.

He was a staunch supporter of ex services personnel, and campaigned to find a building for ex forces to live in, with the Royal Victoria Hospital being one of them.

Brian understood diversity and different cultures. Brian's ward being one of the most diverse across the region.

Brian had a large personal vote whichever party he stood for because he worked hard for people for over 30 years.

As a ward councillor Brian Copping was one of the best, and made a huge contribution to this Council. We should remember him.
