It HAS been Quite Wet
An update on ground water levels in the South East, from Affinity Water https://www.affinitywater.co.uk/my-water/water-resources/southeast
Rainfall in our Southeast region was slightly below average in July at 96% of the Long Term Average (LTA). Over the last three months (May to July inclusive), our Southeast region has received slightly below average of rainfall (89% of the LTA) and effective precipitation (82% of the LTA). Soil wetness (SMD) is currently at average levels for the time of year, meaning that any forthcoming rainfall is likely to provide average contributions to groundwater recharge. Note though that summer rainfall contributions to groundwater level recharge are usually low.
Groundwater levels continue to decline at a similar rate than the LTA but remain above average due to the above average rainfall the last recharge period. Groundwater levels are likely to remain above average over the next five months if rainfall is more than 60% of the LTA. Groundwater levels in our southeast region are currently higher than the above average conditions experienced in 2014 and 2021 but in a lower position than 2001 at the end of July.
