It's Time Shepway LED on Streetlights

3 May 2015

Local Lib Dem Gary Fuller wants to see a much quicker roll out of LED street lighting in Shepway, rather than what he sees as a continuing programme of savings at the expense of public safety. Gary believes that LED street lighting represents both a cost saving and a green investment in our future. LED street lights use 15 percent of the energy of incandescent bulb lighting while generating more light per watt.

Commenting, Gary said:

"Over the past few years we've seen a programme of KCC savings that have left us with numerous rusting stumps, which are a potentially dangerous eye-sore, alongside reduced safety due to a lack of adequate street lighting in some public areas. Whilst LED lighting is being rolled out in various places nationally, it is happening far too slowly locally.

The cost of the initial investment in replacing all of Shepway's street lighting with LED lights would be more than met by the savings in electricity costs over time, especially as such lights can be powered using solar voltaic cells, potentially putting electricity back into the grid. They also represent a much greener option, an important part of the energy legacy we need to leave for our children."
