Kent Police: Stay safe driving in cold conditions
With snow and ice across many parts of Kent over the past two days, Kent Police have issued guidance to stay safe, and motorists are urged to leave plenty of time for their journeys.
It is envisaged that roads will be busy as many people are returning to work and school following the Christmas and new year break.
Their safety advice includes:
- Make sure your windscreens and lights are clear of ice and snow
- Allow extra time for your journey and ensure that you let someone know when you are setting off and when you are due to arrive.
- Check the weather forecast and road conditions before you travel
- Poor weather conditions mean it can be harder for drivers to see pedestrians and cyclists, so be vigilant and make sure you can be seen however you are travelling - this includes using lights or wearing high visibility clothing
- In poor visibility be extra alert for hazards
- Allow extra room to slow down and stop
- Carry warm waterproof clothing, food, water and a torch in your vehicle, in case weather conditions mean you have to stop
- Make sure you have plenty of fuel for your journey before you set off.
