Kent Trading Standards warn of "hoax" receipt fraud emails

6 Jan 2011

Have you recently received an e-mail warning you to "Check your receipts"?

Many of these types of messages are "spam", hoax messages or bogus warnings. This particular one warns consumers about checking their receipt when making a card purchase in a shop to check for any cash back - the consumer will not have asked for or received any cash back but their card and account will have been apparently debited by an amount. The e-mail will urge you to forward this message to family, friends and colleagues.

This is a bogus warning message, and originated in another country. Kent Trading Standards is not aware of any such incidents in Kent. Trading Standards would advise all consumers to check the amount of their goods before paying and to keep any receipt as proof of their purchase. We urge Kent residents to disregard this type of message and advise it should not be forwarded.

You can check the internet to ascertain whether many emails are a hoax or spam e-mail. There are many useful sites, listing this type of e-mail including:

To report any concerns you have call Trading Standards via Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
