Kent Trading Standards warn on "charity" door-to-door calling in New Romney

11 Jun 2010

Two men were recently cold calling in New Romney during the early evening. They falsely advised residents that they had spoken to the Housing Officer of a sheltered housing property and were permitted to visit.

The two sellers claimed to be from a "children's charity" and were collecting money as well as selling household items such as ironing board covers. One was middle-aged and larger than the smaller, younger male and it is believed the males were on foot.

The older male was very intimidating and consumers felt frightened and pressured into purchasing the goods.

Kent Trading Standards advise consumers to be wary when dealing with sellers at their door. If you are approached by anyone offering to sell you goods, turn them away. Have the confidence to say NO.

If you are not expecting a visitor use your door chain, door viewer or window to check who it is. Do not allow anyone into your home unless you have already made an appointment to see them and they have identification to confirm who they are.

If you have a caller at your door who you are concerned about please notify Trading Standards via Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or the police.
