The NO2ID campaign have issued a reminder that there is still time to renew your passport without getting onto the National Identity Register - the massive database at the heart of the ID card scheme - but the government is hiking the cost of 10 years' freedom to £66 from October 5th. You can expect further rises so if you have just a few years left to run on your passport, now's the time to renew.

Shepway Lib Dem Chair Tim Prater is a supporter of the campaign, and has already renewed his passport early. Tim said:

"With a passport that had only a few years left to run, it made sense to renew it early before the latest price hike. Also, with the Government's appalling record with large computer systems, I want to do anything possible NOT be be in the National Identity Register.

"Some people may trust the current Labour Government not to abuse the data such a massive and centralised database could collect, but I'm not of of them!"

As a part of the 'Renew for Freedom' campaign, the NO2ID campaign would like to hear from anyone who gets a NON-chipped passport after Oct 1st.

For more information and a factsheet, see http://www.renewforfreedom.org/.

If you do renew and receive an old style passport after 1/10/06, please send an e-mail to renewforfreedom@no2id.net.
