Sarah Smith: Campaigning for a Dover Townwall Tunnel for years

"I am delighted that Dover's current MP has finally recognized that Dover must have a road tunnel" said Sarah Smith, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Dover & Deal.

Smith has campaigned since 2014 for a tunnel to take A20 traffic off Townwall Street and relieve Dover town of traffic gridlock and air pollution. She spoke to reporters on Friday after MP Charlie Elphicke called for a road tunnel in an online article after massive traffic jams and delays across East Kent caused by a shortage of French border staff at Dover port the previous weekend.

"The A20 through Dover is the main route for traffic into Europe's busiest ferry Port it is critical for our national and local economy, but the town pays a heavy price. Residents suffer from noise, poor air quality, traffic gridlock and the division of town and seafront. The wall of trucks on Townwall Street is the single greatest barrier to successful regeneration.

"A road tunnel may cost more upfront than bridges and pedestrian underpasses. But it will prove a much better investment in the long term, transforming Dover's environment and the town's fortunes." said Smith.

"Conway in Wales got a tunnel, the Conservative Government has promised one for Stonehenge. The case for Dover is even stronger.

"I call on local politicians of all parties to commit to the campaign for a road tunnel. Let's think big. Now is the time and Dover is worth it." added Sarah.
