Lib Dems announce candidates

14 May 2004

Shepway Lib Dems have announced today that they have submitted nominations for 15 candidates for Folkestone Town Council, and 2 candidates for Sandgate Parish Council.

Shepway Lib Dem's Parliamentary Spokesman Peter Carroll said "I am delighted that our party is fielding such a strong list of candidates for these elections.

"Our candidates represent a wide variety of backgrounds and many have never stood for election before. These are local people who care very deeply about our local community. I am very much looking forward to working with them all to improve our area."

Local Party Chair John Hughes said "We felt it would have been inappropriate to field more than two candidates in Sandgate. The new Council there is to be a Parish Council, not a Town one, and these have a very different nature being far more independent.

"We decided to stand one candidate in each of Sandgate's wards so that any resident who wishes to vote Lib Dem is able to do so, but to allow other independent candidates to take their rightful place running the Parish.

"We are lucky to have had so many excellent people coming forward to be candidates for what I am sure will be an exciting campaign."
