Mayor of Hythe Neil Matthews and the Liberal Democrats have called on Hythe residents to back plans for new Sports Centres in Hythe and Folkestone. A Hythe Town Meeting has called a special referendum on the future of Hythe Sports Centre. The poll is independent of Hythe Town Council and will be held on 29 June.

A "No" vote in the poll would further jeopardise the funding of the joint PFI project for new Sports Centres in Folkestone and Hythe.

The Liberal Democrats have weighed into the referendum campaign with a leaflet to be delivered across Hythe. The leaflet strongly supports the Hythe Sports Centre project, and calls on local residents to vote Yes on 29 June.

The leaflet says:

"Hythe needs a Sports Centre that can deliver state of the arts’ facilities to the people; young and old alike.

"To have a chance of getting the necessary funding, Hythe must send a strong message to the Government. Your vote on 29 June will help.

"Please use YOUR vote on 29 June to SUPPORT a new Sports Centre for Hythe. YOUR support offers all our young people better facilities and a better future.

"The only feasible site that offers crucial Sports England backing AND sufficient space is on South Road. That site offers:

  • Car and coach parking
  • Existing sports pitches retained
  • Football and Cricket changing facilities
  • A high quality, well landscaped design fitting for a conservation area."

The Sports Centre Referendum Poll will be held for Hythe voters on Thursday, 29 June.

With different rules to a normal vote, there is no postal voting for this referendum.

There will also be no polling cards issued: you just turn up to the polling station.

Polling stations are the usual polling stations EXCEPT in Hythe North where polling will take place at the Town Hall on Hythe High Street NOT the Methodist Hall.

Polling stations will be open from 4pm - 9pm. Polling stations on the day:
