Lib Dems Call for Independent Investigation and Suspension of Conservative Andy Weatherhead

16 Nov 2022

The Liberal Democrats have today called on the Folkestone and Hythe Conservatives to suspend their County Councillor Andy Weatherhead following disturbing relevations about his political past.

Local Party Chairman Adam Roweldge has written to his Conservative party counterpart after an article on the respected Hope Not Hate website.

The letter reads:

Mr. Stephen James
Association Chairman
4 West Cliff Gardens
Folkestone CT20 1SP

Dear Stephen,

Adam Rowledge
Rowledge: called for investigation and suspension of Cllr Weatherhead

I am sure you are aware of this disturbing article that appeared on the Hope Not Hate webs ite dated 15 November 2022 ( https://hopenothate.org.uk/2022/11/15/exposed-tory-county-councillor-was-key-member-of-fascist-group/ ).

The article makes a series of allegations about Councillor Andy Weatherhead, the serving Conservative County Councillor for Hythe West. We understand that Cllr Weatherhead has also been selected as a Conservative candidate for the May 2023 District Elections.

I am sure you will agree that the allegations as presented in the article are serious and concerning. No doubt you will agree that they warrant robust investigation at the earliest opportunity.

Given that the allegations have been made publicly and will naturally cause public concern, to maintain trust the greatest possible degree of transparency is necessary. Residents in Hythe West and across our wider community will wish to be reassured that the allegations are indeed unfounded, or if they are true, that swift and robust action has been taken.

Given the serious nature of the allegations, I would ask that you withdraw the whip from Cllr Weatherhead today, at least until an investigation is concluded. I would also recommend that the investigation is conducted independently of the Folkestone & Hythe Conservative Party to give further reassurance that it is being taken seriously.

Upon completion of the investigation, I'd appreciate that you write to me, to the County Council, and also issue a public statement on the allegations and the corresponding actions you are going to take or have taken.

I appreciate your prompt attention on this matter.

Sincerely,

Adam Rowledge
Chairman
Folkestone and Hythe Liberal Democrats
