Lib Dems listen to residents on public toilets

26 Apr 2004

The Lib Dem group on Shepway District Council is urgently reviewing the decision to close many public toilets in Shepway.

The responsible Lib Dem Cabinet member John Hughes said, "We never wanted to close the toilets, but we were forced to make an immediate decision by a Government demanding spending cuts at the last minute of the budget process. We have now listened to the depth of public feeling demonstrated in the Folkestone East by-election and we are looking at the issue again."

No decision can be taken until Thursday at the earliest as the Council will find out whether it is to be 'capped' by the Government. The Government could decide to force the Council to cut many more services if they decide to 'cap' the district.
