Peter Carroll believes that young people should not be punished by heavy fees for going to University

Speaking on behalf of Shepway Liberal Democrats Peter Carroll has slammed last nights vote on tuition fees as a complete betrayal of the interests of students and parents across the County.

Peter said, 'This vote means that New Labour will carry on with its plans for top-up fees, a market in higher education and the imposition of massive debts on young people aspiring to go to University. The proposals are wrong in principle and are flawed in practice. Every citizen benefits by having a better educated society - the fairest way to pay for higher education would be by general taxation on those that earn the most'.

Peter added, 'I can't imagine how any Labour MPs that supported this measure will ever be able to look their constituents in the eye. Students from poorer backgrounds will be deterred from going to University. Many students who are just above the threshold for help will be frustrated to find that they receive little help'.
