Liberal Democrats Win New MP in Cheadle

15 Jul 2005

Mark Hunter has been declared as the new Member of Parliament for Cheadle with a majority of 3,657. Lib Dem Mark fought a positive campaign on the issues that matter to local people, and is delighted to have been elected to succeed local favourite Patsy Calton. Despite an American-style negative and personal campaign by the Conservatives, their candidate fell to a humiliating third successive defeat in Cheadle.

Liberal Democrats from across the country have been helping in the Cheadle campaign, including Shaun Roberts and Miranda Piercy from the Shepway Lib Dem team.

Mark and the Liberal Democrats thank all Cheadle local residents for their support. The result was:

  • Liberal Democrat Mark Hunter - 19,593
  • Conservative - 15,936
  • Labour - 1,739

New Cheadle MP Mark Hunter said:

"Our area was lucky to have an MP like Patsy - I know from my work alongside her the commitment she showed to our area. For me she was the model MP, listening to local people and taking our local issues to Westminster.

"I'm so proud to have been elected her successor by the voters of Cheadle. I pledge to carry on Patsy's fight for local people. I will continue to campaign for more police on our streets, more funding for our local schools and the completion of the vital A555 link."
