New Pedestrian Crossing to Access Folkestone West Station
in 2019, I was approached by a local resident about whether there was the possibililty of a new pedestrian crossing across Shorncliffe Road to lead to the footpath entrance to Folkestone West train station. That's a route used by hundreds of Sandgate and West Folkestone residents - school pupils, commuters and others - each day.
Currently when you leave the station and walk the footpath towards Audley Road, you end at Shorncliffe Road nearly opposite Audley Road, but with no clear designated crossing place or indication to drivers.
I raised the problem and made the case to Kent Highways engineer Damien Cocks, who looked at the site, agreed there was an issue, and put together a proposed plan for a new crossing. He's taken that plan and the supporting case through the Kent Highways commissioning process, and today gave me good news! Damien says:
"I have received confirmation funding will be available from 01/04/20 to proceed with the installation of the Zebra crossing point at Shorncliffe Road. I'm currently working on the detailed design and expect to have this constructed by September this year."
An information and consultation leaflet will be produced soon and sent to those living in close proximity to the new zebra crossing location.
Many thanks to Damien and Kent Highways for their proactive support with this project, and we look forward to seeing the new crossing in place, hopefully around the start of the new school year.
