New political group to ‘deliver common sense’ to Folkestone and Hythe

Gary Fuller, Paul Thomas, Tim Prater and Connor McConville: the new Folkestone & Hythe Lib Dem and Independent Group

A new political group has been formed by members of Folkestone and Hythe District Council – and it is set to make a big difference on behalf of local residents.

The Lib Dem and Independent (LD&I) Group comprises Liberal Democrats Tim Prater and Gary Fuller and Independents Connor McConville and Paul Thomas.

Paul Thomas is a well respected district councillor and former Mayor of New Romney.

Connor McConville was from May 2019 to 2024 the Leader of the Labour Group at F&HDC and their agent at the May 2023 local elections. He left the Labour Group on 18th February.

Tim Prater said:

“This has presented us with a magnificent opportunity to work together to deliver common sense decisions on things that matter to local people.

“On all key local issues, the four of us have found, over the last few years, that we agree. That’s an excellent basis for working more closely together.”

The Lib Dems have already been working alongside the Green Party as part of the administration of the council since it was elected two years ago. That will continue and be strengthened by the Independents.

Tim added:

“All four of us will continue to be free to vote as we wish on any issue or resolution. We shan’t have any kind of group ‘whipping’ arrangement: just an agreement to discuss issues and votes in advance.

“And, as a foursome, we will have a greater presence and say in key meetings where the council’s business is done. Gary and I have long admired the contributions made by Connor and Paul and are excited to be working with them in this way.”

Paul Thomas said:

“I look forward to working with Connor, Gary and Tim. They are hugely experienced Councillors and they will help me deliver a better service to my residents.”

Connor McConville said:

”I am looking forward to working with new partners, with a fresh approach, to ensure our council is in the best position to deliver for local residents."
