Folkestone and Hythe Lib Dem Gary Fuller has reacted with fury at news reports that Folkestone and Hythe District Council may be again considering its unpopular plan to store nuclear waste under the Romney Marsh.

Recent news reports have suggested that Cllr David Godfrey, cabinet member for special projects, "would feel comfortable" with the idea of a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) the size of 22 wembley stadiums being situated under the Marsh. Reports also suggest that Folkestone and Hythe District Council has asked for more information from the Government about its plans for such a facility.

Folkestone and Hythe Lib Dems campaigned against the plans when they were first suggested by the then Shepway District Council in 2012. The Council dropped the previous scheme after spending £40,000 on a consultation that showed there was little public support for a nuclear dump under the Marsh.

Commenting, Gary said:

"Clearly this is the wrong site for a Geological Disposal Facility. It's in the South East, which is a densely populated area, it has poor transport links, it's on a flood plain, the surrounding rock probably isn't geologically suitable and this area has suffered the 4th strongest UK earthquake this century."

"The dump would be right on the doorstop of both a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an RSPB reserve. It's a completely nonsensical plan and the Council should drop it right away."
