Opinion: We face a triple pronged attack on our liberty.

The Conservative Government is making a concerted attack on freedom itself.

The plan to repeal the Human Rights Act is but one of the three prongs to their attack on our liberty. The other two prongs to this attack are the Snooper's Charter (Draft Communications Data Bill) and the Pleasure Ban (Psychoactive Substances Bill).

The Snooper's Charter is the equivalent to forcing internet service providers to follow you around the internet, whether you're at home or at work, noting down every single thing you do, "just in case" you think about breaking the law.

And It gets much worse. Not only will you be followed around all day every day, the Government will have broken every single lock, meaning anyone could be watching you, listening to you, and/or taking everything you own. It'll be open season for hackers, stalkers, and cyber-criminals.

Meanwhile, the Pleasure Ban is exactly what you'd expect from the name. Any substance that can affect your mood will be banned unless it is specifically exempted by the Government. The Government will have the power to make waking up and smelling the roses illegal, something they really need to do.

Banning dangerous substances, whilst it doesn't always have the desired effect, is at least understandable. What the Pleasure Ban does though is ban everything, unless the Government specifically says you can have access to it. That's the kind of logic you expect from dictators, not servants of the people.

The debate about the Human Rights Act is an important debate. It protects and acknowledges our most basic and fundamental freedoms. But the repeal of this Act isn't the first, or the only, nail in the coffin of our freedom being hammered through by this Government.

I therefore call upon everyone who believes in freedom to show their opposition to all three of these draconian plans. Anything less means accepting that freedom is a privilege awarded by Government, rather than a right afforded by our very existence.
