"Press the Government to change its approach to the refugee crisis" local Lib Dems urge Dover's MP

2 Sep 2015

"British leaders must call up our better natures in response to this crisis - not lend respectability to base fear and selfishness." said Sarah Smith, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Dover & Deal in a letter sent to Dover's MP today.

Following a meeting of local Liberal Democrat members last week Smith has written to the MP asking him to put pressure on the Government to change its approach to the refugee crisis.

Sarah Smith said:

"We have a proud history of providing refuge. For example to the 4,000 jewish men fleeing Nazi persecution who were housed at the Kitchener Camp in Richborough in 1939. Local people gave food and firewood and welcomed the men into their homes.

"We do not want to become a people who turns its back on others. It is time for the UK to play its part, respond with generosity to the UN's calls for a commitment to placing refugees, and work constructively with the EU and the UN to tackle the crisis in Calais and beyond and save lives.
