Radnor Park pond and blue-green algae... [Updated]

Radnor Park pond in Folkestone has been fenced off overnight by Shepway District Council as there is a suspected case of Blue-Green Algae (also know as Cyanobacteria). . Shepway Council have confirmed that the Environment Agency have tested the water and that the results are awaited.

Updated Monday 22 August PM: Shepway Council have now had it confirmed that there is Blue-Green Algae at Radnor Park Pond. More substantial fencing will be installed, alongside signage advising people to keep away from the water (especially if they have pets) as algae is potentially toxic and enhancing regular monitoring of the pond.

Folkestone County Councillor Tim Prater commented:

"Shepway Council seem to be acting fast on this outbreak which is good news. I've asked them how quckly the outbreak of algae is likely to be cleared and fencing and signs can be removed so that local residents can enjoy the pond as before. In the meantime, it is possible that the algae can produce toxins which are dangerous to humans and animals. Keeping outside the security fencing, and ensuring your pets do so as well, will minimise any risk."
