Shepway Liberal Democrats have learned that a number of staff members at struggling South Kent College have received letters offering them the option to apply for voluntary redundancy in the past few weeks.

Folkestone Lib Dem campaigner Gary Fuller, himself a Basic Skills Lecturer and Staff Corporation Member at another local provider, has learned that staff members teaching in least two different subjects have received such letters. It is not clear at this stage how many staff members have received such letters in total, or whether or not any have taken up voluntary redundancy.

Commenting, Gary said:

"South Kent has had a terrible time recently and the last thing the staff members at the College need is talk of redundancies.

"If merger plans are to be a success, and a credible curriculum offer is to remain at all three of the South Kent campuses, improving staff morale must be a major priority, and redundancies are not the way to do this."
