A runaway dog that turned up on the doorstep of Hawkinge Lib Dem Councillors Peter and Christena Smith has been returned to its owners.

The Jack Russell terrier had been spotted days earlier fending for itself in the village by residents who reported it to the RSPCA. It was finally found on the Smith's doorstep on New Years Eve.

Peter and Christena took the dog in and gave it a bath and food. They then contacted the RSPCA and now the dog has been re-united with its owners.

Cllr Peter Smith said, "We were pleased that we could help and are delighted that the owners have been found."
