Yesterday's by-election result in New Romney Town delivered a body blow to the Labour party in Shepway. Labour lost their only District Council seat in Shepway by a huge margin, where as the Lib Dems held their vote in the face of a vigorous campaign from the other parties.

Lib Dem candidate, Toni Powell ran a strong campaign focusing on local issues like the Conservative Council's fiasco with rubbish recycling, Lydd airport and anti-social behaviour.

Speaking after the result, Toni said 'I would like to thank everyone who supported my campaign. I very much enjoyed going out and meeting people on the doorsteps of New Romney and I hope the new Councillor will take on the issues that my campaign highlighted'.

Lib Dem Election agent, James Bertin said 'This is a truly shocking result for Labour after their dreadful General Election result. It shows that Labour cannot win anywhere in Shepway'.

Result in Full (Turnout 34%):

  • Conservative 560
  • Labour 175
  • Lib Dem, Toni Powell 111
