Shepway Lib Dems back Campaign against loss of Eurostar services at Ashford
Campaigners from Shepway and across the South East joined a protest led by Lib Dem Euro MP Sharon Bowles against the threat to Eurostar services from Ashford International.
The international service has come under threat from new plans by Eurostar to make the new Ebbsfleet station the "hub" for the South East.
The volume of services from Ashford to the continent has been slashed, and residents and staff now fear for the future of international services from Ashford.
The demonstration at Ashford International Station last Friday follows rumours, which Eurostar refuse to deny in writing, that the decision to axe services to Brussels and reduce services to Paris was just the start of a total withdrawal from Ashford.
Local Lib Dem Campaigner Peter Carroll was one of those at the protest, and was clear on the threat to the Folkestone area. He said:
"Moving of international services from Ashford to Ebbsfleet disadvantages Folkestone and Hythe more than almost anyone else, adding 70 miles to a round trip - at least 40 minutes. Many people and businesses have been drawn to this area with the promise of excellent services to Europe - and then they are being snatched away.
"Eurostar should put in writing a promise to keep international services from Ashford - and then honour it. All those who are concerned about the potential loss of this service should see the campaign web site at www.saveashfordinternational.org.uk for more information."
