Shepway Liberal Democrats have selected well known Councillor Lynne Beaumont to fight the Folkestone & Hythe seat at the next general election which is scheduled to take place in May 2015. Local Lib Dem members selected Lynne emphatically over fellow contender George Cunningham following a hard fought 3 week selection campaign.

Lynne said:

"It is a great honour to fight for this seat at the next general election. As I have in my role as district and town councillor, I will always put my constituents first.

"Voters will face a stark choice in 2015.

"Labour simply can't be trusted on the economy. They wrecked it last time and they'd do it again.

"The Conservatives can't be trusted on fairness and I do not think that the current sitting MP has served his local constituents well. This area needs an MP that puts Shepway first, not Westminster.

"There are rumours that UKIP may put up Nigel Farage himself. If they do, I say 'bring it on'. It's believed that 4,175 jobs in Folkestone & Hythe depend on Europe. My first question to any UKIP candidate will be: why would we want to put those jobs at risk?

"Since we entered Government in 2010, the Lib Dems at national level have played a full part in turning the economy around from the disaster left by Labour. They've had to take some very difficult decisions, but because they have stuck to a credible economic plan the economy is now growing and we have record numbers of people in jobs.

"I know that many local people are still struggling financially and that there is a long way still to go before the economy is fully repaired. However, the only way to improve living standards is to fix the economy.

"I am proud that the Lib Dems have helped rescue the economy, given 24 Million working people a substantial £700 tax cut and saved motorists £7 a tank full by freezing fuel duty. We've also worked to ease some of the pressure on household energy bills."
