Shepway Write-off £145,000 in Council Tax

Shepway District Council wrote off £145,000 of Council Tax as uncollectable in 2006-07. Overall, English councils wrote off more than £130m of unpaid tax last year, according to figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Neighbouring Ashford Borough Council wrote off £4,000 over the same period, and Dover District Council £71,000.

The write-off figures for all Kent Authorities for 2006-07 were:

  • Ashford £4,000
  • Canterbury £183,000
  • Dartford £410,000
  • Dover £71,000
  • Gravesham £743,000
  • Maidstone £148,000
  • Medway Towns UA £278,000
  • Sevenoaks £270,000
  • Shepway £145,000
  • Thanet £870,000
  • Tonbridge & Malling £84,000
  • Tunbridge Wells £93,000
  • Kent Total £3,299,000
