Spare Snow Tyres Mr Carter? Stick a Sock On It...
During the recent snow, Kent County Council Leader Paul Carter was urging drivers to keep a set of snow wheels and tyres to cope with heavy snow in future, sayinmg that we can learn from the Scandinavians and that more investment in salting is not the answer.
It's an interesting suggestion: not least that for many people, the cost of spare wheels / tyres, the storage implications for drivers without a garage, and the difficulty of changing wheels for 2-3 days of snow / ice render it pretty much impossible for many people. Snow chains have some of the same problems - not least that if the road conditions change quickly, you are then driving on a clear road in snow chains - neither good for safety or the road.
There may however be an alternative solution - an "Autosock" for your tyres - cheaper, easier to fit and store. While I've not tried them myself, the reviews seem quite good, and may be worth a try for those that need to drive even if there is snow on the ground.
